Anyone who has spent time driving in an urban or suburban area has probably had a close encounter with someone on a bicycle. Cyclists can easily slip in and out of our blind spots and are nearly impossible to hear coming up behind you. In countries like the UK, this problem is much larger since many more people commute to work by bike. That led to more than 19,000 injuries and deaths of cyclists on public roads in a single year. So now Jaguar is putting its resources towards finding a solution.
Meet 'Bike Sense.' It is one more in the latest suite of in-cabin Jaguar technologies like the 360 Virtual Urban Windscreen. 'Bike Sense' uses advanced sensor technology to detect when a bicycle is approaching the car. When one gets close, objects in the car vibrate, a light flashes, and a bell inside the car rings. This lets the driver know that it's not a good time to change lanes or open the door.

That prototype was built into a new Jaguar XJ, but we have been told not to expect this particular piece of tech to get the production greenlight for some time.
